On July 21st Hitachi hosted a private viewing in London for the unveiling of the AT100 & AT200 mock ups.
The AT100 was designed to meet the needs of metro operational conditions and requirements outlined by Hitachi. The design meets the demands of an early morning rush, whilst providing passengers with clear information and a range of comfortable seating.
The design hosts a range of features such as:
- Sliding doors with integrated LED light units indicating the opening side to reduce ingress and egress speed.
- Under seat LED lighting encouraging passengers to store their luggage underneath their seats.
- A unique central perch offering a comfortable space for passengers and providing elegant grab handles.

The AT200 was designed to meet a wide spectrum of requirements for regional or outer suburban commuters outlined by Hitachi. Focusing on consumer needs and integrating the latest technology into the vehicle, the AT200 has everything the modern day passenger would require.
Also looking at the demands of an operator, modularity and functionality was a key issue to address. By utilising cantilever t-slot mounted units throughout the vehicle, operators are presented with the opportunity to manipulate the interior to meet their demands.

For the class 700 we designed a new series of universal signs that met legal requirements as dictated in the document BS 5499-1, ATOC AV/ST 9005 and PRM TSI requirements.
A multi lingual, minimalist style was used to create clear and concise graphics for passengers on board.
Innovatively for a multiple unit train operating in the UK, the driver is centrally positioned in the cab. This allows the opportunity for an instrument layout that takes account of ergonomic and human factor requirements (accessible for those within the 5th percentile female to 95th percentile male range) more fully than is usually possible and also has great advantages for driver visibility. The cab design recognises the crucial importance of the driver in service delivery by ensuring controls are logically zoned for use, do not obstruct or obstruct one another and are within easy access. Interactive diagnostic screens provide the driver with real time information on train status and operation for system interrogation and control, while banked CCTV screens insure safe and efficient platform departure. This modern, crashworthy, wide view, ergonomic cab environment will therefore promote greater levels of efficiency in driving, energy consumption, dwell time management, journey time maintenance, train failure management, passenger safety, passenger communications and personal driver safety.
The construction process of a full size mock up in Germany. As we were involved in the interior design we over viewed the construction process of the mock up. The mock featured various working units including the lights, multiple switches and controls. The mock up also proved useful for testing out the signs and notices, which can be seen in a separate case study.
With safe, light and spacious interiors, passenger focused information systems and optimised access for passengers, the Class 700 provides comfortable travel and an enjoyable journey experience. Looking at the needs of the operators, carefully designed canti-lever units have been used resulting in a flexible interior, which can easily be adapted to meet their demands.
Canti-levered seats from the body side allow for unobstructed floor space so passengers can place small items of luggage underneath if they prefer and also makes cleaning much more efficient. The slim seats allow for a tighter pitch maximising the seat numbers per carriage and the seat back grab handles providing an ergonomic hand hold, ideal for passengers stood in the centre of the aisle during peak times.
The vestibules have been designed to direct passenger flow at times of peak demand, optimising ingress and egress times. At the centre of each vestibule is a ‘totem’ providing additional hand holds for standing passengers and is angled in a certain manner to direct passenger flow.
Another key features is the open and unobstructed inter vehicle gangway allowing rapid transit between carriages. In peak demand the gangway can also acts as a vestibule providing passengers with a handhold in a clean and comfortable environment.
The luggage stack has been crafted to integrate with the draught screen, reducing structural complexity and maintaining the design aesthetic carried throughout the interior.
We have strived to create an open and calming environment for passengers whilst designing a flexible interior for operators that can be catered towards their needs.
We developed a range of seat fabrics options with Holdsworth for the Thameslink train. Utilising cut and uncut moquette to increase the strength and durability of the seat options whilst also creating a contemporary feel and aesthetically pleasing design and texture.
A range of three concept interiors including regional, metro and intercity modules for the UK. Designed with consideration to the differing operational requirements. With consideration to interior layout, human factors, equipment, rationalisation, passenger information displays and TSI technical requirements.

In support of NX’s franchise bid for London Overground services Schoenemann Design were commissioned to create a metro interior that considered passenger ingress and egress, a high standing to seated ratio, and implications to vehicles performance.
